How to Compress Images in Your Browser

Published October 11, 2026 · U18-CHAN editorial team

A photograph, screenshot and transparent logo do not need the same export settings. JPEG is often practical for photographs without transparency. WebP supports transparency and adjustable lossy quality. PNG is lossless and can be useful for crisp graphics, but its file size may remain large. Decide how the image will be displayed before choosing an output.

Use the U18-CHAN Image Compressor alongside this guide.

Keep an original copy

Choose a supported JPEG, PNG or WebP file in Image Compressor. The selected image stays in the browser and is re-encoded through a canvas. Keep your source file separately, because an export can change metadata and image encoding. The interface rejects files above 25 MB and images above its 40-megapixel processing limit.

Try quality settings gradually

Select JPEG or WebP and begin with a moderate quality setting. Process the image, compare the reported sizes and inspect visible detail. Small text, gradients and hair can reveal compression artefacts quickly. A new export is not guaranteed to be smaller, especially if the original was already efficiently compressed.

Resize before chasing extreme compression

If your page shows an image at 800 pixels wide, a much larger source may add weight without visible benefit in that position. Use Image Resizer to choose sensible dimensions while preserving the aspect ratio. Account for high-density screens and the actual responsive layout rather than forcing every image to one arbitrary size.

Check the final file in context

Download the export and review it in the place where it will be used. Confirm transparency, dimensions, sharpness and the chosen format. JPEG flattens transparent areas onto white. The built-in tools handle still images and do not support SVG, HEIC, RAW or animated-file workflows. Keep the original for later edits.

A simple finishing check

Keep the original input, inspect the result and confirm that it fits the destination where you plan to use it. If a result looks unexpected, try a small harmless example and read the limitations on the tool page before proceeding.
