What Is Base64 Encoding?

Published October 11, 2026 · U18-CHAN editorial team

Base64 represents bytes using a text alphabet. It is useful when a system expects text but the original data includes bytes that do not fit that channel conveniently. An encoded value remains readable by anyone who decodes it. It is not encryption and does not establish a private communication channel.

Use the U18-CHAN Base64 Encoder alongside this guide.

How the built-in text encoder works

The Base64 Encoder first represents your text as UTF-8 bytes, then creates standard Base64 text. That matters for characters outside basic ASCII, such as Punjabi letters or emoji. The decoder reverses the process and requires the resulting bytes to form valid UTF-8 text.

Recognize common characters

Standard Base64 uses upper- and lowercase letters, digits, plus and slash. Padding can use an equals sign. Other systems use URL-safe Base64 with different characters, so confirm which variant your source expects. This decoder is designed for the standard alphabet, not every possible transport variant.

Check the direction and destination

Encode ordinary text when you need its Base64 representation. Decode a known Base64 value when you need its original text. If you are working with a binary image or archive, the decoded bytes may not be a text document and this text-focused decoder may reject them. Use a file-specific workflow for binary content.

Do not confuse related tools

URL Encoder performs percent encoding for a URL component. SHA-256 produces a one-way digest for comparison. These transformations have different purposes and are not interchangeable. Keep secret material out of shared devices, and review where copied or downloaded values will be stored after using a local browser tool.

A simple finishing check

Keep the original input, inspect the result and confirm that it fits the destination where you plan to use it. If a result looks unexpected, try a small harmless example and read the limitations on the tool page before proceeding.
