Word counts are useful when a draft has a length limit, when you want to plan reading time or when you are comparing several versions of a piece of writing. Begin by checking what your destination counts. A school assignment, a social platform and a publishing system can have different rules for headings, footnotes, URLs and punctuation.
Use the U18-CHAN Word Counter alongside this guide.
Use the live counter
Open the Word Counter, paste your draft and read the count cards as you edit. The interface shows words, Unicode characters, characters excluding whitespace, approximate sentences, paragraphs and estimated reading time. Keep the original document open so you can decide which parts belong in the final submission.
Understand the boundary rules
The counter uses browser word segmentation when available and a Unicode-aware fallback otherwise. That is useful for many scripts, but the result can differ from an editor that counts every whitespace-separated token. Sentence counts are approximate because abbreviations, bullet points and unusual punctuation can be ambiguous. Emoji may contain several code points even when they look like one symbol.
Count only the relevant material
If the brief excludes captions or references, remove those parts from the counted copy. Avoid deleting them from your original file simply to obtain a number. For a character limit, open Character Counter and check whether spaces matter. The destination system remains the final authority for its own limit.
Use counts to improve the draft
A total tells you how long a piece is; it does not tell you whether the piece is helpful. When shortening a draft, remove repeated ideas before stripping useful examples. When expanding it, add information the reader needs. Reading time assumes 200 words per minute and should be treated as a rough estimate rather than an exact schedule.
A simple finishing check
Keep the original input, inspect the result and confirm that it fits the destination where you plan to use it. If a result looks unexpected, try a small harmless example and read the limitations on the tool page before proceeding.
